Is buying a hybrid car worth the cost?
If you are currently searching for a car to buy, you have probably stumbled upon certain hybrid car models. These cars have distinct engine features that can be differentiated from others. These vehicles can operate on electricity only. This, in turn, can also operate conventionally through the use of fuel as well (whether it is diesel or gasoline), thus making it a “hybrid” vehicle.
Does a hybrid car cost more?
A hybrid vehicle is relatively more expensive than a typical car. Thus some people tend to eliminate these types of cars from their search for this reason. Let’s examine whether these cars are worth paying extra for. Here are a few considerations when deciding whether it is worth paying the higher price tag:
Driving conditions.
A simulation was conducted by Autotrader.com using the Toyota Prius, a hybrid car against Toyota Corolla, a conventional one. Between the two, there is a price difference of about $5,000 where the Prius is the expensive one. The simulation was conducted analyzing their fuel economy. The Prius yields 51 mpg in city driving and 48 mpg in highway driving. On the other hand, the Corolla produced 28 mpg in city driving but kept pace with 42 mpg in highway driving. Though there is an obvious discrepancy in fuel economy, the savings on a Prius come in increased fuel economy. This makes up for the higher price.
Battery replacement.
A relatively true statement about hybrid cars is that its primary operating power source is its battery. Yes, it is true that replacing the battery is a significant cost, but most car brands offer a long warranty on the hybrid battery. Some hybrid vehicles have a battery warranty up to 10 years.
Service / maintenance availability.
Though it is a good idea to have factory trained technicians from car dealerships maintain your vehicle, especially a hybrid model, more independent mechanics have become familiar and confident working on these types of vehicles due to their increased popularity. Some people find allowing independent mechanics to work on or maintain their vehicle concerning, while others are not concerned at all. Some people choose to have independent mechanics repair or maintain their vehicle simply because independent mechanics typically charge less than car dealerships, thus saving money. Whatever your decision, research the facility to make sure you are comfortable with their level of expertise.
Lower costs.
One benefit of hybrid vehicles is they save money overall (though not in the price). They also reduce harmful effects of emissions coming from gasoline or diesel engines. These cars are appealing to some and less so to others.
Environmental impact.
Better fuel economy and a smaller footprint on the environment are common reasons for choosing a hybrid vehicle. Ask yourself what is your motivation behind considering a hybrid vehicle.
